Titans include Simms, Gado, Rolle in roster cuts

Football Betting Lines

09/04/2010 - Nashville, TN (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Tennessee Titans narrowed their roster to the NFL maximum of 53 players on Saturday, releasing 20 as part of their "cut- down day" maneuvers.

Released were defensive end Eric Bakhtiari, defensive end Raheem Brock, fullback Jed Collins, wide receiver Dominique Edison, running back Samkon Gado, defensive end Chris Harrington, cornerback Tye Hill, defensive tackle David Howard, guard Nick Howell, defensive tackle Joe Joseph, center Kevin Matthews, guard Nevin McCaskill, running back Alvin Pearman, tight end Steven Pfahler safety Myron Rolle, tight end Sean Ryan, quarterback Chris Simms, tackle Michael Toudouze, linebacker Patrick Trahan and wide receiver Paul Williams.

Notables among that group are Brock, an eight-year NFL veteran with the Colts (2002-09) who was signed last month; Gado, the ex-Packers starter who appeared in 15 games with the Rams last season; Hill, a former first-round draft choice of the Rams who was with Atlanta last season; Rolle, a sixth-round rookie who made headlines as a Rhodes Scholar at Florida State; and Simms, the former Buccaneers starter who was attempting to crack a depth chart already including QBs Vince Young and Kerry Collins.

Also on Saturday, the Titans placed linebacker David Thornton on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, and LB Gerald McRath was added to the Reserve/Suspended list.

Thornton, who will be ineligible to play for the first six games, has been bothered by knee and hip ailments. McRath will be suspended for the first four games due to a violation of the league's policy against performance-enhancing drugs.

The Titans open their 2010 season next Sunday, when they play host to the Oakland Raiders.

Academy Award Betting Odds for Best Picture Offer Great Value

If there is any category that is not an obvious win for any one nominee in this year's Academy Awards, it would be for Best Picture.  Sure the Departed is a 5/7 favorite, but that's hardly anything when we look at Helen Mirren and her "out-of-reach" 1 to 40 odds (which means you would win a whopping $1 for every $40 bet).

For value, take a look at MySportsbook.com Oscars betting odds on my personal favorite, The Queen - a remarkable 12 to 1 long shot.  The film hasn't won any pre-awards for Best Picture (compared to The Departed and Little Miss Sunshine), but there is a tremendous following and it is a strong enough film to warrant a surprise win.

TV Guide advises Oscar watchers should be cautioned not to discount the  drama "Babel" with its strong social themes about overcoming communication gaps among people of different cultures.

"While 'Babel' lost several guild awards to 'Sunshine' and 'Departed,'  it still enjoys loyal support, and historically Oscar voters favor dramas with social messages over comedies like 'Sunshine' and violent crime movies like 'Departed'."

"It hasn't done well in the guilds, which means there isn't much industry support," said Tom O'Neil of awards site TheEnvelope.com, "But several critics are expecting it to win, and that gets my attention." Babel had 7 to 2 odds at press time.

Who is to say independently produced Little Miss Sunshine won't be this year's Crash.  Last year, Crash won for Best Motion Picture, shocking those who bet on gay cowboy flick, Brokeback Mountain, as the favorite to win.
